Along with the colorful flowers blooming on the vegetable plants, come the pollinators! We are so grateful for the honey bees on the farm that have their hive in the bee boxes, but we are also so excited about all the native bees and other insects that we see enjoying the nectar of the vegetable flowers and are important for pollination. Mobile Coop!
The hens have new wheels! This is the new mobile coop for the hens so we can move them throughout the pasture. Being mobile gives the hens access to fresh pasture with bugs and such, which they like and is good for them. Mobility also makes sure they don't over manure any one area and degrade it, while allowing them to fertilize it in a beneficial way. #freerange #happyhens #csa #thumbsup
Killdeer
For a couple weeks now as we work in field, there has been a Killdeer (bird) sounding her high pitched alarm, pattering at high speed through the rows around us and trying to get our attention with her "fake injury" display. But we could not find the camouflaged nest she was protecting! Finally while cultivating, Tim found it nestled between lettuce heads. See it? Lucky (or super smart?) for her, it is not in a furrow and did not go the way of the weeds. #camoflauge#farmscape #killdeer #livingwithwildlife
